I was just reading Dante Douglas's post on International Podcast Day and also realized that I forgot to post about what Podcasts I like listening to and should recommend. So here we go:
Audio Dramas
NOTE: I am going to try and be vague on these to prevent story spoilers
Sinkhole
A Sci-Fi Podcast about a sinkhole that ate a bunch of people in our time and spat them out 50 years later, with various side effects. The story follows one of the victims of the sinkhole and their chats on a data mining forum in the future.
Out of Place
Ben Counter's podcast about parallel worlds. Season one follows Andrew Moss working as an archivist for the Carruthers Institute dealing with historical artifacts that clearly cannot be from this world. He catalogues them and speculates on how history went "wrong" to create them. Two seasons, a short listen per episode, and quite frankly a diamond hidden in the rough of podcasts that deserves more love.
SCP Archives
You know the SCP Foundation Wiki? What if a bunch of tanleted actors read them like an audio book? And it was well directed and had professional sound quality? You should listen to it.
Observable Radio
Another Parallel worlds podcast, following a comet passing their radio station, "The Observer" finds they are not only able to leave, but get errant signals from parallel worlds streamed into their studio.
Mayfair Watchers Society
Co directed by Pacific S. Obadiah, who directed Out of Place and SCP Archives above, and Trevor Henderson, the artist and creator of Siren Head, this podcast is about the small town of Mayfair and all the paranormal creatures that hang about the town. Inspired specifically by Trevor Henderson's monster art, it will sure to keep you up at night.
The Magnus Archives
The granddaddy of all modern horror podcasts, follow the new archivist of the Magnus Institute Johnathan Sims as he looks through statements in the unorganized archive and determines if they are genuine encounters of the supernatural.
History, Politics, & Culture
Behind the Bastards
Journalist Robert Evan's gives us a survey of some of the worst people in history, including dictators, talk show radio hosts, shitty executives, war criminals, dirty cops, and the occasional founding father.
Sixteenth Minute of Fame
Journalist Jaimie Loftus looks at the main characters of the day on social media from the past ten years and follows up on them. This has included the 30-50 feral hogs, slide cop, the dress, Ken Bone, and so much more. Its hilarious and good to laugh and look at a time when the main character of social media wasn't one of two man babies who are at various positions to end the world and ruin our days.
Cool People Who Did Cool Stuff
Author Margaret Killjoy does an opposite of Robert Evan's cousin podcast and instead talks about the radicals and the revolutionaries of history who made the world a better place
Some/Even More News
Half an audio version of the Cody Johnston hosted Some More News, and half news podcast cohosted by cowriter/producer Katy Stoll, they talk about current politics and news from a left wing perspective.
Better Offline
Ed Zitron, tech consultant and marketer, gives an unvarnished an irreverent look at the tech industry concentrated in Silicon Valley and how they constantly grift and pull the wool over consumer's eyes. He speaks truth to power on NFT and AI Grifters as well as the execs of major tech companies, levying heavy criticism on the BS of modern tech and the "Rot Economy."
Media Criticism
Homestuck Made This World
Two college professors and media critics, Michael Lutz, a fan of Homestuck, and Cameron Kunzelman, somebody who never read it, do a critical reading of Homestuck and its influence on internet culture in the early 2010s.
Shelved By Genre
A sort of follow up to Homestuck Made This World, Michael and Cameron are joined by Austin Walker as they critically analyze genre fiction by authors like Gene Wolf, Ursula K. le Guinn, and Junji Ito. They also occasionally watch a Hallmark Original Movie.
Versus Wolves
Woolie and Super Eyepatch Wolf try to get one another to embrace a piece of media.
A More Civilized Age
Rob Zacny, Natalie Watson, Ali Acampora, and Austin Walker critically watch and pull a deep dive into the The Clone Wars and later Rebels Star Wars cartoon series. They also sometimes PIVOT! into other Star Wars media. The only critique I have of this show is their dislike for my boi, the legend, HONDO OHNAKA!
Something Rotten
YouTube Essayist Jacob Geller and Games Journalist Blake Hester deep dive into what they call "Rotten" Games, ones that they consider "dark, violent, and nihilistic." Considering your average shooter and GTA, this could get hairy folks.
As always, thanks for reading!
